build an electronic device from a plan by a internationally known sound artist, modify (circuit bend) the device, and design/build/integrate these parts into a final interface.
  • Concepts and Skills:
  • -intermediate experience with electronics theory(conduction, continuity, resistance, etc.)
  • -intermediate experience with prototyping on the breadborad, soldering
  • -intermediate experience with electronic components, printed circuit boards, diagramming
  • -intro to critical interface design, modification (modding), adaptation of existing tech, reductionist interface vs. poetic interface

  •  Build a kit device: Castro's Tactile Noise Machine. Students will breadboard their designs in order to discover a set of unique sounds and practice protyping and PCB construction techniques. Integrate the soldered version of the project into User Interface. Exploration of the User Interface as a critical, creative and/or artistic medium. Public Critique Evaluation.

    • Finish up assignments and reading if not caught up.

    • Thread through top and solder on bottom
    • LED seat all the way down to the board, tight as possible against board for prevention of breakage
    • Wires tight against board to prevent breakage
    • Soldering iron with pointed tip- electro chemical material.  Creates a bond between the metals. stable connection.  
    • Dirty up soldering iron first, clean and apply preheating one side.  Tip should be shiny, corrosion will inhibit soldering iron from flowing.  
    • Volcano shape that covers entire spot
    • Cold joints: not hot enough for chemical bonding
    • Solder made of lead and other metals, flux (rosin) will smoke
    • Ventilator will pull pollutants from the air
    • Be hygienic while creating.  Wash hand to prevent transfer of metals to body, hands to oral contact.

    Week 2 Reflection Post September 3-9

    I went through many drafts on the body modification project feeling unsure in what direction I was going.  In the end, I went back to the first draft.  I have learned that maybe I should trust my judgment right out instead of back tracking and making things harder on myself.  I began to remember Professor Asmuth telling us to have fun with this when I was at my wits end.  This caused me to reflect and began trusting myself.  This project was a big learning experience, I shouldn't try so hard sometimes and just let it all happen.

    I try my hardest to reflect and connect with given reading responses, the art and noise assignment being no different.  I have always connected emotion and art attempting to isolate a certain emotion for the viewer to feel.  Using noise will give another element of control, or lack their off, in a viewers reaction to a piece.  The uncertainty is intriguing to say the least.  I just hope I can keep up and thrive with the electrical aspect of it all.

    The Art of Noise Reading Response 
                   Noise can be developed and used in numerous ways, one of these being utilized in art.  When involving the senses, noises can trigger an emotional response whether voluntary or involuntary.   Either man made or commanded by nature, noises project feeling, movement and emotion.  Nature caries her own beautiful music through wind, water, rocks, leaves, and more.  The evolution of noise came through man experimenting with music.  Musical instruments are used to create sounds, professionally musical notes; these sounds are then turned into songs and set the mood for the listener.  Sound is used to set the atmosphere in controlled environments for intended purposes.  Religious music is used for example in churches to set the tone for followers.
    Various musical cords were explored in relation to emotion and reaction.  Then came noise-sound, the revolution of sound with an increase in machinery.  Machinery creates not only pure sounds but noise among an infinite number.  It is intriguing that sound and noise are not heard the same by all listeners.  Some music is excruciatingly painful to some while painful to another.  Songs carry memories, the noise they make triggering a moment, feeling or interruption of thought.  Loud noises can startle causing a fright, soft noises perk up the listener in an attentive motion.  A loud enough noise can accompany vibration affecting more senses than just hearing but are felt in touch as well. 
    Feeling rhythmically and harmonically also affects the pleasantness of music and sound.  Being off key or off beat confuses listeners and may cause unpleasant reaction.  Keeping steady with the rhythm however, sets a stage of harmony.  When thinking of noise, one must consider what affect they are wanting to have on the audience.  The chosen sound will affect the listener and should be taken in high consideration.  Scream high pitched terror or a dogs bark, the affects would both be different but does not mean that either are wrong.

    Week 1 Reflection Post August 27-31

    Venturing into Electronic Art has been intimidating but intriguing.  I have seen glimpses of hope with completing the exercises successfully.  Watching the video, having a partner and instructor assistance gave me the needed confidence to complete the first bread boarding exercise.  I know it will take all of my concentration and focus to get through this course, I am totally out of my element but willing to learn. 

    Completing the throwies assignment was easier than I thought it would be.  I am glad I could build them without any hitches.  This was a fun assignment and I was able to see how the LED reacted with the opposites sides of the battery.

    Thinking of an electronic adaptation I would like to have has harder than I thought.  I think that I would like to have mechanical wings so that I may fly away whenever I wanted.  The sky seem so freeing, I would really enjoy it at night.  Having other bird notifications would be interesting too, sharp talons and bird feet meant for landing.

    The article was interesting but beyond even my sense of morbid curiosity.  I have seen the video of the poor elephant being zapped to death and it is difficult to watch.  I know that with technical advancements in science come benefits but I also know that unnecessary evils come as well.

    Electric Performance Art
                    The normal human being thinks of electricity as a simple, modern convenience with not much usage other than power.  But the truth of the matter is, electricity is so much more than that.  Electricity is not just in the wires of a building that power our lights; us, as humans, are also electric.  Artists reach past the norm and explore the possibilities of connecting electricity and the human body.  Testing the durability of flesh versus electrical charge is science; science is also art.  Stimulating the human nervous system causing involuntary reaction per electricity forces the subject into a reflexive performance.
    Electrical performances can contain more than one individual completing a circuit.  Considering that the human body is conductive, a connection of human beings could continue if there was enough power to surge through the subjects.  One is left to wonder how much electricity a body can handle before it is fried like that of an electric chair; in this case, size does matter.  Experiments were done on various sizes of animals to test how close to death they could get.  The data received from the experiments would prove vital in seeing how powerful electricity really is.  A fight for using electricity as an instrument of executioner death began. 
    From all the experiments with AC DC currents and Leyden Jars, electronic art evolved further.  Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation was one of these evolutions into the context of electric performance art.  Facial muscles are involuntarily stimulated by that of electricity displaying a show for viewers to marvel at.  Once again, science and art connected after this marvel was experienced.  Advancements in medical science with electric currents and paralyzed limbs were made possible because of electric performance art.  From visual art to the theater, and now to the internet, electricity, has amplified the body performing science for the thirsty viewer.
